2025 Annual Celebration in Honor of the Judiciary

June 26, 2025
6 PM Reception / 7 PM Dinner
The Boston Intellectual Property Law Association proudly presents the Honorable Leo T. Sorokin with this year’s BIPLA Distinguished Public Service Award.
Judge Sorokin is a United States District Judge for the District of Massachusetts. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale College and his J.D. from Columbia Law School, Judge Sorokin began his legal career as a law clerk for Judge Rya W. Zobel in Boston. He later worked in private practice, at the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, and as an Assistant Federal Public Defender. Judge Sorokin was first appointed to the District of Massachusetts bench as a U.S. Magistrate Judge in 2005, and President Barack Obama nominated him to be a District Judge in 2013.
Judge Sorokin has served with distinction in his two decades on the bench. He has made significant contributions to many areas of law—including presiding over several IP disputes—and has had a particularly significant impact on criminal justice. One of Judge Sorokin’s many contributions is the RISE program, which is a unique restorative justice initiative that he envisioned and launched in the District of Massachusetts. The RISE program offers a second chance for some adult criminal defendants with a verifiable history of addiction or a life of extreme deprivation to pursue a guided program of rehabilitation, work, and education promoting healing and accountability. Participation in RISE is considered at sentencing.
The BIPLA thanks Judge Sorokin for his two decades of service on the bench and is pleased to award him the 2025 Distinguished Public Service Award.
