Dear esteemed colleagues,
Thank you for your interest in the Fall 2022 Edition of the BPLA Newsletter, and welcome to any new members!
In this quarter’s newsletter, we explore new executive orders regarding EU-US data transfers and the Federal Circuit’s decision on whether AI is an inventor. From the BPLA subcommittees, the Invented Here! Committee recognized this year’s Honorees at the 12th Annual Invented Here!, which celebrated 20 patents represented by inventors, company managers, patent attorneys, and others. We also look back at our welcomed return to a live event for our Annual Celebration of the Judiciary. The newsletter also features a letter from past BPLA presidents urging members to follow the Board’s recommendation and vote in favor of renaming our organization the Boston Intellectual Property Law Association.
I would again like to thank my Associate Editors Erin McGuine and Simeon Wright, the BPLA’s exceptional administrator, Constance Brennan, and the staff of Readz for their help in preparing this newsletter. If you have suggestions, requests, or submissions for a future issue, please feel free to reach out to me at vice-president@bpla.org.
And, finally, allow me to utilize whatever modicum of a bully pulpit my position as editor affords to reiterate my support for the name change. At a time when intellectual property is becoming ever more prominent in the law and important to our economy, we have seen BPLA membership numbers dwindle. We simply cannot afford to continue marketing our great association with a name that actively misstates our mandate and our mission. There are both existing and upcoming intellectual property practitioners who have never considered the BPLA, convinced we focus only on patents. I believe the new name will expand our reach and increase our membership. Please join me in voting yes.
