Passing of John Doll, 35-Year Veteran of the USPTO
On May 20, 2021, John Doll, a 35-Year Veteran of the USPTO died from a prolonged battle with lung cancer. Doll joined the USPTO as a patent examiner in 1974 and rose to hold the position of Commissioner for Patents, and Acting Director of the USPTO. Doll worked tirelessly towards enhancing the quality of the patent system and worked closely with both the unions representing USPTO examiners, but also with industry. At his retirement in 2009, former USPTO Director Dave Kappos shared that Doll “earned respect both inside and outside the agency for his leadership, his knowledge, and his passion for the USPTO and the U.S. intellectual property system.” After retiring from the USPTO, Doll continued his service to the patent community as an expert witness. He was also a father, grandfather, and husband. The patent community benefitted from his long years of service and the BPLA asks that you take a moment to remember his contributions to our field.
