The US-China Intellectual Property Exchange & Development Foundation
BPLA member Demi Wang has inaugurated the US China Intellectual Property Exchange and Development Foundation. Serving as President and CEO, Demi is leading the UCIPF in its mission to facilitate cooperation between the IP professionals of the world’s two largest economies. At this critical juncture in U.S.-China relations, the Foundation serves as an important vehicle to promote understanding and collaboration, and to build on the remarkable achievements in harmonization and economic development that have been secured over the last three decades. Demi, an active member of the BPLA since 2014, previously served as partner in one of Asia’s premier patent and trademark law firms. She brings her extensive experience, and contacts throughout the U.S. and China, to this new venture.

Rebecca (Becky) Simmons, Ph.D.
, has been elected Principal of the firm.

, Principal at Hamilton Brook Smith Reynolds, stated, “We are honored to announce Becky’s advancement to Principal. In her new role, our pharmaceutical clients will continue to benefit from Becky’s sophisticated approach to chemical patenting and counseling.” Becky has a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard University and a B.S. in Chemistry and French from Boston College. She received her J.D. from Boston University School of Law. Becky has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including the Eli Lilly Organic Chemistry Fellowship, Fulbright Foreign Scholarship, Gabelli Presidential Scholarship, and the IBM Thomas J. Watson Memorial Scholarship Award. She has also been named an Edward F. Hennessey Scholar and a Robert B. Woodward Fellow. For 10 years, Becky has assisted clients with their IP-related needs in the areas of pharmaceuticals, chemistry, cosmetics and biotechnology. Her practice includes strategic intellectual property counseling and lifecycle management, patent preparation and prosecution, due diligence, and preparation of legal opinions. Her clients range from sole inventors to global pharmaceutical companies and include start-ups, venture capital firms, and research institutions. In the pharmaceutical field, Becky has particular experience with the preparation and prosecution of both U.S. and foreign patents involving small molecules, including stereoisomers, polymorphs and prodrugs, antibiotics, cannabinoid receptor agonists, and anti-cancer drugs. She also has experience with secondary patents in the chemical arts, including method of treatment, process, solid form, formulation, and combination therapy patents. Becky has also assisted extensively in patent litigation.

As a Principal, Becky will be able to assume an even more significant role in continuing to build strong IP portfolios for our Firm’s clients.” As a graduate student at Harvard University, Becky developed a strategy for bioconjugation and used the approach to isolate the known protein targets of two natural products in pull down experiments. Prior to completing her Ph.D., Becky worked in the Research Division at Hitachi Global Storage Technology and in the Storage Technology Division at IBM. She also worked as an undergraduate research assistant at Boston College and Ecole Superieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles (ESPCI) in Paris, France.
