The BIPLA’s 14th Annual Invented Here! Event Recap
The Boston Intellectual Property Law Association (BIPLA) celebrated this year’s Honorees at the 14th Annual Invented Here! event, held on December 10, 2024, in Lincoln, Massachusetts. The Invented Here! event is an exciting evening of showcasing inventors in our local innovation community. This year’s twelve Honorees were selected from among more than fifty nominations for patents that have issued within the past five years. Some of the Honorees have just begun to bring their inventions to reality, others are well along the path, and all have taken advantage of the extensive intellectual property law talent in the Massachusetts area that is supported by the BIPLA, an organization whose mission is education, service, and community. The Invented Here! event gives the BIPLA an opportunity for its members to bring innovators together as peers to be recognized for their contributions toward improving the human condition through their innovations. The BIPLA takes pride in honoring those innovators, and in educating the public about how the patent system advances science and technology, by providing an opportunity for the public to meet fascinating innovators and innovations.
The Invented Here! committee thanks the fantastic sponsors for putting on this event. Specifically, Invented Here! appreciates the support from our Silver sponsor, Hamilton Brook Smith & Reynolds P.C.; our Bronze sponsors, Robins Kaplan LLP and Greenberg Traurig LLP; and our university sponsor, Northeastern University.
A special thank you belongs to the Massachusetts Governor’s Office for officially making November 20, 2024, “Massachusetts Inventor’s Day,” with a Proclamation to this effect signed by the Governor of the Commonwealth, Maura Healey; Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth, Kimberly Driscoll; and the Secretary of the Commonwealth, William Galvin.
A diverse portfolio of interesting and cutting-edge technologies were presented at the event. Inventors and representatives from prestigious universities and colleges, such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, University of Massachusetts, Harvard University, and the University of New Hampshire were in attendance, as well as individual companies, such as ABL Medical Inc., K2B Therapeutics, Perceptive Technologies, Inc., Silver Aqua, Inc., OnPoint Surgical, and Vox Biomedical LLC. Each nominee, Honoree and representative presented new and valuable contributions to better the world we all share.

Following a networking hour, Co-Chair Mark Solomon provided introductory remarks to congratulate the selected Honorees who joined us this year, welcomed the individual members of the BIPLA in attendance, and thanked our wonderful sponsors, as well as everyone else who put their best efforts forward to make this event successful.
Each Honoree, or representative for the Honoree, was then asked by Co-Chair Nicholas Zachariades to come to the podium and make a short presentation about the innovation being recognized. Following the audience’s consistent applause, Mark Solomon presented each Honoree with a plaque in honor of the Invented Here! event recognition.

Prior to the event, BIPLA members and the public were invited to take an online survey (via scanning a QR code) to select which of the Honorees should be among this year’s Featured Honorees. During the event, after all Honorees presented, attendees were invited to vote for invention(s) they felt most strongly should be among this year’s Featured Honorees. At least one criterion was whether the patented innovation benefited the human condition. The three patented inventions with the most votes were honored as the 2024 Invented Here! Featured Honorees. The Committee Chairs noted that all of this year’s Honorees were deserving of Featured Honoree recognition.
"A really great event this year, with exceptionally interesting entries and a beautiful venue. And a thank you to Mark Solomon for his continued dedication to this important public outreach program of the BIPLA!”
– Michael Bergman
The three Featured Honorees were then invited back to the stage to answer questions about themselves, moderated by BIPLA members and Past Presidents Deirdre Sanders of Hamilton Brook Smith Reynolds and Michael Bergman of Bergman LLC. The Featured Honorees were asked questions such as what inspired them to become inventors, whether they had any mentors in their careers, how they found their way into their respective fields, and if they experienced any particular “Aha!” or “Eureka!” moments during their process.
The three Featured Honorees this year were Robert Rabiner, from ABL Medical Inc. of East Providence, RI, for his contributions toward the Anti-Microbial Blue Light Systems and Methods patent; Jay Kim, from K2B Therapeutics, Inc. of Cambridge, MA, for his contributions toward the Therapeutic Compounds for Red Blood Cell-Mediated Delivery of an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient to a Target Cell patent; and David Elliott, from Silver Aqua, Inc. of Carlisle, MA, for his contributions toward the Portable Pathogen Deactivation Method and Apparatus patent. Each of the three Featured Honorees captivated the audience’s attention by providing insight into not only their invention but also their inventive process, as well as advice for those trying to turn their ideas into a reality. The message that the audience heard is to be consistent and stay true to your idea.

This is the first year since the inception of the BIPLA’s Invented Here! program that all of the Featured Honorees represented a patent for an invention by a small company.
“Thrilled that our patent has been recognized by the BIPLA with such distinction, and hope this opens many new opportunities, particularly in the innovation community with those investors who are the real bloodline for the innovation ecosystem.”
– JAY KIM
“Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.”
– David Elliot quoting W.H. Auden
“It is an honor to have our patent for anti-microbial blue light systems recognized by the BIPLA. ABL Medical is developing an important medical technology that delivers multifrequency light to achieve antimicrobial effects, helping to reduce the risk of infection in patients. As a Rhode Island company, we are proud to be part of this special BIPLA event, recognizing the innovative New England ecosystem. We want to thank the BIPLA and the patent attorneys at Greenberg Traurig.”
– Robert Rabiner
The evening concluded with another networking hour, allowing everyone to congratulate one another on their contributions and gain insight into technological advancements to which they might not otherwise have been exposed.
“The Invented Here! event is a wonderful way to honor local inventors for their innovations that improve our lives and the world around us. It is a great opportunity to speak in person with members of our innovation community and be inspired by their stories.”
– Deirdre Sanders
The purpose of Invented Here! is to celebrate innovators, their inventions, and the stories behind their innovations. Qualifying patents must have been issued within the last five years or be claimed in an issued patent tied to a product that received U.S. regulatory approval within the last three years. In addition, these inventions must have been developed in New England or by an inventor in New England. Honorees represent a science or technology that can be described or demonstrated to the general public.
The Invented Here! committee of the BIPLA, by its Co-Chairs, also thanks Mark Solomon, Hamilton Brook Smith Reynolds; Nicholas Zachariades, Fox Rothschild; Aaron Connor, Genezen; and George Jakobsche, George Jakobsche Patent Counsel PLLC, for the hard work that they put into making this event a success, which they have done year after year.
Thank you to the BIPLA members who submitted over 50 client nominations for this year’s Invented Here! event. We hope to see you all there next year!
